Gemstones are rare natural minerals, of considerable beauty and durability. At Celtic Promise we are delighted to offer the three classic ‘precious stones’ in our jewelry: emerald, ruby and sapphire, as well as the more unusual but striking Chrome Tourmaline. These beautiful gemstones are 100% natural, and provide a spectacular centerpiece to many of our pieces.

We also offer stunning birthstone designs, the colours and meanings of which can be found in our Gemstone guide below.

Birthstone: July / December & Capricorn. Anniversary: 15th, 40th.

Ruby Jewelry - Celtic Promise Rubies are the birthstones for the month of July and are used to celebrate a couple’s 15th and 40th anniversary. Rubies symbolize love, passion, and power. These gems come from Corundum family of stones that are known for their excellent hardness, next only to the diamonds. In ancient Sanskrit scriptures, it was referred to as ‘Ratanraj’ which means ‘king of gemstones’. Given its radiant red hue and brilliance there could not have been a better name to describe this stunning stone.

Interestingly... During an auction of the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by Sotheby's on April 24, 1996, a 17.68-carat ruby ring sold for $290,000; some cabochon ruby earrings sold for $360,000; and a cabochon ruby necklace was a bargain at $247,500. Marlene Dietrich owned a ruby bracelet that sold at Sotheby's for $990,000. Rubies have also a famous place in science - the first lasers were made from artificial ruby crystals.

Birthstone: September & Taurus. Anniversary: 5th, 45th.

Sapphires are the birthstone for September, and are used to celebrate a couple’s 5th and 45th wedding anniversary. Sapphires symbolize truth, sincerity and fidelity. From the same family of stones as Ruby, Sapphires are known for their hardness and brilliance. Famous for their magnificent blue hue, it was once believed that Earth rests on a big rock of sapphire and it is from this stone that the sky got its sky blue color. Sapphires are believed to be one of the most precious gemstones.

Interestingly... The most famous sapphire ring of all time belonged to Lady Diana. Prince Charles presented this enormous 18 carat deep blue oval sapphire ring surrounded by 14 diamonds. Interestingly, the ring created quiet a stir in England as the Prince had broken tradition by choosing sapphire over diamond, a move not initially welcomed by royalty. Recently in a moving tribute to his mother, Prince William used this ring in proposing to his now wife, Kate Middleton.

Birthstone: October & Libra. Anniversary: 8th

Chrome Tourmaline is the birthstone for October, is used to celebrate the 8th anniversary of marriage and symbolizes protection and safety. It exhibits a magnificent green color that resembles, and can even rival, that of fine Emerald which also owes it's amazing color to traces of Chromium. It is also strongly pleochroic, which means that when viewing the stone from different angles, different color intensities will be visible, with the deepest coloration always being displayed along the stone's main axis. Chrome Tourmalines’ pleochroism, combined with it's clarity, durability and breathtaking color amounts to a truly memorable gemstone that can be past down from generation to generation.

Interestingly... This is known as the “Rainbow Stone”, because of the range of colors that can be found within. As legend has it: ancient Egyptians believed that the stone travelled from the core of the earth to the surface through a rainbow, which subsequently gifted the stone with all the colors of the rainbow.

Birthstones are gems that are thought to have certain qualities which associate with particular months of the year. The stones color and month pertains to youth, healing, romance, good luck, amongst other symbolic meanings.

Birthstones originate with the Biblical story of the Exodus in which the Breastplate of Aaron was adorned with twelve precious gemstones which represented the twelve tribes of Israel.
